
Cargo vs In-Cabin Pet Travel: What the Data Actually Shows
A data-led comparison of cargo hold conditions vs in-cabin environments, and why the difference matters for your pet.
For most pet owners, the question of cargo vs in-cabin travel has an obvious emotional answer. But beyond instinct, what does the evidence actually show? Here we look at the measurable differences between cargo hold conditions and passenger cabin environments, and what those differences mean for your pet's safety and wellbeing.
Temperature
Cargo holds in modern wide-body aircraft are typically temperature-regulated, but not to the same standard as the passenger cabin. The FAA mandates that live animal holds be maintained at a minimum of 7°C (45°F) and a maximum of 29°C (85°F). In practice, temperature variability is greater than in the cabin, particularly during loading and unloading at the gate, where animals can be exposed to extreme ambient temperatures on the tarmac.
A 2023 USDA report found that the majority of pet in-flight fatalities occurred during loading or unloading on the tarmac, not during the flight itself. In-cabin travel eliminates tarmac exposure entirely.
Altitude and Oxygen
Passenger cabins are pressurised to the equivalent of approximately 6,000–8,000 feet altitude. Bulk cargo holds — the lower deck holds used for checked baggage and live animals — are pressurised to the same level as the cabin, as they share the same pressurisation system. However, heated cargo holds vary by aircraft type, and not all aircraft types that fly pet-carrying routes maintain identical conditions in lower deck holds.
Noise and Vibration
Noise levels in cargo holds are significantly higher than in the passenger cabin, particularly during taxi, takeoff and landing. Studies on canine and feline stress markers have found elevated cortisol levels correlating with high-noise environments. In-cabin travel exposes pets to passenger cabin ambient noise (around 80 to 85 dB at cruise), which is lower than cargo hold levels during the same phases of flight.
Separation Anxiety and Psychological Stress
Perhaps the most underappreciated difference between cargo and in-cabin travel is the psychological impact of separation. Dogs in particular are highly bonded to their owners, and being placed in an unfamiliar, dark, noisy environment without human contact for hours at a time is measurably stressful, regardless of the physical conditions.

Incident Data
The US Department of Transportation publishes monthly airline incident reports that include pet injuries, deaths, and losses. The vast majority of reported incidents involve animals transported in cargo — not in-cabin. In-cabin pet incidents are extremely rare and typically minor.
In 2023, US airlines reported 21 pet deaths, 12 injuries and 1 loss, all in cargo. Zero in-cabin pet fatalities were reported across all US carriers that year.
