Preparing Your Pet for New Zealand: Which Import Pathway Applies?
Australia and other approved origins follow different MPI pathways. Check the current standard before arranging a permit, tests or quarantine.
For an eligible pet travelling from Australia, New Zealand generally does not require an import permit or routine quarantine. Pets from other approved origins normally require an import permit and at least ten days at an MPI-approved quarantine facility. These are different pathways, not exceptions to a universal rabies-and-quarantine checklist.
MPI’s permit and quarantine guidance explains the Australia distinction. Australia-pathway animals still need the applicable health certification, identification and species-specific tests or treatments; “no quarantine” does not mean “no preparation”.
New Zealand’s 2026 standard and transition
MPI’s current import guidance says the new Import Health Standard came into force on 1 July 2026, with the 2021 standard accepted during a transition ending 1 April 2027. Use the 2026 step-by-step process or the applicable transitional process with your preparing veterinarian. Follow one complete applicable protocol; do not mix test windows or certificates from different versions.
Arrange the journey in the right order
- Confirm that the exporting country, pet’s residence history, species and breed are eligible.
- Select the applicable MPI standard and government certificate with the preparing veterinarian.
- Where required, reserve an MPI-approved quarantine facility and arrange the import permit before finalising transport.
- Check identity verification and veterinary preparation dates against the chosen standard, including any staged implementation dates.
- Plan the arrival inspection and authorised onward transfer. Confirm when you can collect your pet instead of assuming immediate release.
Travelling from New Zealand to Australia?
That is a separate import journey. Read the Australia import guide and have the New Zealand export certification checked against Australian conditions. A short flight does not remove either country’s paperwork.
Reviewed 7 September 2026. This guide explains the main planning decisions; the applicable government conditions, permit and flight-specific instructions determine the documents and arrangements for your pet. Recheck them before booking and before departure.
