Travel Tips

Preparing Pets for Long-Haul Flights

A few simple steps in the days before departure can make long-haul in-cabin travel calmer and more comfortable for your pet.

  • Encourage gentle hydration in the hours before travel, but avoid offering a large drink immediately before boarding.
  • Feed a light meal a few hours before departure rather than right before, to reduce the chance of travel sickness.
  • Acclimatise your pet to their IATA-compliant travel crate at home in the weeks leading up to the flight so it feels familiar and safe.
  • A gentle walk or play session before heading to the terminal helps expend excess energy and keeps them calmer en route.
  • Consider a calming aid such as a worn item of your clothing in the crate to provide a reassuring scent throughout the journey.
  • Schedule a final veterinary check within the required window before departure to confirm fitness to fly and complete any last treatments.
