Bringing Your Pet to Australia: The Complete Import Guide for 2026

Australia has some of the world's most rigorous pet import requirements. Here's exactly what you need to prepare.

Australia's biosecurity regime is among the most rigorous in the world, and for good reason. The country's unique wildlife and agricultural ecosystem is vulnerable to diseases that are endemic elsewhere. As a result, importing a pet to Australia requires meticulous planning, often 6 to 12 months in advance.

All dogs and cats arriving in Australia must undergo a mandatory quarantine period at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) facility in Mickleham, Victoria, regardless of how they travel.

Approved Countries

Australia classifies countries into approved and non-approved groups. Pets can only be imported from approved countries. The UK, USA, UAE, Singapore and New Zealand are all approved. If your pet has ever lived in or transited through a non-approved country, this can affect eligibility.

Core Requirements

  • ISO 15-digit microchip (implanted before rabies vaccination)
  • Rabies vaccination (if coming from a country with rabies risk)
  • Rabies titre test (required from most countries — result ≥0.5 IU/ml)
  • Approved import permit from the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF)
  • Veterinary Health Certificate endorsed by the relevant government authority of your origin country
  • Treatments for internal and external parasites within required timeframes before departure
  • Mandatory quarantine (minimum 10 days for most approved countries)

The Titre Test Timeline

For pets coming from most countries, the rabies titre test is mandatory. The blood draw must occur at least 180 days (6 months) before arrival in Australia. This 180-day waiting period is calculated from the date the blood was drawn, not from when the result was received.

This is the most common mistake pet owners make: they assume the 180-day period can be compressed or that a recent titre test from another trip can be used. It cannot. The clock starts from the blood draw date, and there is no exception.

The Import Permit

You must apply for an import permit from DAFF before your pet can travel. Applications are submitted through the Biosecurity Import Conditions System (BICON). The permit specifies the exact conditions your pet must meet before and after arrival, including the quarantine facility, duration, and any required treatments.

Mandatory Quarantine

All incoming pets must spend a mandatory period at the Mickleham quarantine facility in Victoria. The minimum is 10 days for pets from most approved countries. Pets from New Zealand may qualify for a shorter period. There is currently only one approved quarantine facility in Australia, located in Mickleham, VIC, which means all pets arriving from overseas must transit through Melbourne, regardless of final destination.

  • Quarantine is mandatory. Plan for a minimum of 10 days at the Mickleham facility
  • The facility provides daily care, veterinary monitoring and a comfortable kennel environment
  • Owners cannot visit during the quarantine period
  • Onward travel to Sydney, Brisbane or other cities is arranged after quarantine clearance
