What to Expect on Skye Pets Departure Day
A step-by-step walkthrough of what happens from your arrival at the terminal to wheels up.
Departure day is the moment every Skye Pets customer has been preparing for, often for months. Unlike a commercial airport experience, it's designed to be calm, unhurried, and stress-free from the moment you arrive.
Arriving at the Terminal
Skye Pets flights depart from private or general aviation terminals, not commercial passenger terminals. You will receive detailed arrival instructions in your pre-departure briefing pack, including the specific terminal location, parking arrangements, and check-in window.
We recommend arriving at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure. Unlike commercial check-in, there are no queues, no self-service kiosks, and no crowds. You are met by a member of the Skye Pets team on arrival.
Check-In and Documentation Review
A Skye Pets team member will review your pet's travel documentation at check-in. This includes your veterinary health certificate, import permit (where required), vaccination records, and microchip confirmation. All documents should be originals unless advised otherwise.
Bring physical copies of all documents and do not rely solely on digital versions. Some destination countries' border officials require original, wet-signed documents.
The Private Lounge
After check-in, you and your pet will have access to a private lounge area before boarding. This is a quiet, low-stimulus environment, deliberately different from a busy commercial terminal. Your pet's crate will be set up in the lounge area so they can settle in before the flight.
Boarding
Boarding is a calm, unhurried process. Your crated pet is placed in their designated cabin position, directly across the aisle from your allocated seat on long-haul flights and within your direct line of sight. On AU to NZ routes, crate placement may vary by aircraft configuration.
Takeoff and the First Hour
Pets must remain in their crates for takeoff. Once the aircraft reaches cruise altitude and the seatbelt sign is switched off, dogs may be allowed to join you at your seat. Cats remain in their crates throughout the flight per our safety protocol, consistent with IATA Live Animals Regulations guidance for feline in-cabin travel.
Food and Water
We advise against feeding your pet within 4 to 6 hours of departure to minimise the risk of travel sickness. Water and light snacks are provided for pets at appropriate intervals during the flight. The crew will advise on timing. A toilet area is provided on board for dogs, with toilet pads provided by Skye Pets.
Arrival
Arrival is handled through a private or general aviation terminal at your destination, mirroring the departure experience. Your Skye Pets team briefing will include full arrival logistics, including customs processes, quarantine procedures where applicable, and ground transport options.
