Europe to Australia With Pets: How to Connect via London
Compare pet taxis, LeShuttle and ferries to London, then plan the veterinary handover and Australian arrival for a shared in-cabin flight to Melbourne.
A European starting point does not have to mean a separate long-haul cargo booking. Families can plan a road, rail or sea journey to London and then join a SKYE PETS shared in-cabin charter to Melbourne. The first job is to coordinate the pet’s Australian preparation with the country that will issue the final export certificate.
Start with your country
The guides below cover every European country on Australia’s current Group 3 list, plus Gibraltar and the Crown Dependencies listed separately by the Australian government. Iceland belongs to Group 2; Romania is not currently on the approved Group 3 list, so neither is presented here as a Group 3 origin.

Compare the main ways across to Britain
| Option | Where it fits | Pet arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| LeShuttle | Calais–Folkestone with your car or booked taxi | Pet stays with you in the vehicle; no foot-passenger service. |
| Le Pet Express | Calais Fréthun–Ashford shared shuttle | Book the owner and pet; arrange both station connections separately. |
| Elite Pet Taxi | Private transfer from advertised European gateways | Quote the full pickup, passenger, pet, luggage and London drop-off requirements. |
| Stena Line | Hook of Holland–Harwich; also relevant Irish and Scandinavian routes | Prebook the ship-specific pet cabin, kennel or lounge; some routes accept foot passengers. |
| DFDS | Dieppe–Newhaven; other routes have different conditions | Foot-passenger pet options are available on Dieppe–Newhaven; reserve the actual pet allocation. |
| Brittany Ferries | France/Spain–England and Guernsey connections | Compare the ship’s pet cabin, kennel or vehicle arrangements before booking. |
LeShuttle and Eurostar are different services. Ordinary pets cannot travel on Eurostar trains to or from London. A continental train journey with your pet can still be useful, but finish it at a station where a booked road or ferry connection can take over.
Get the British arrival paperwork right
For an ordinary owner-accompanied movement from the EU, a valid accepted pet passport can document the microchip and rabies vaccination. The primary rabies vaccination normally needs a 21-day wait. Dogs entering from France or the Netherlands need a recorded tapeworm treatment by a vet 24–120 hours before British arrival. Cats do not need this tapeworm step. The direct-arrival exemptions for Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta and Norway do not extend to a subsequent entry from France.
If the pet is transported separately, ownership is changing or the owner is not travelling within the applicable five-day window, ask which movement rules apply. A commercial animal transport booking is not automatically the same as an owner travelling with their own pet.
The Australian timeline: what to arrange first
For Group 3 pets, the rabies neutralising antibody titre test (RNATT) is part of the preparation. The minimum 180-day waiting period is measured from the laboratory’s receipt of the qualifying blood sample to export. It is not counted from the vaccination date or the day the family booked the flight. The result also has a validity period; the preparing vet should work to the current species-specific conditions.
Discuss government identity verification before the RNATT and other preparation. Eligible pets completing the required identity process may qualify for a minimum ten-day quarantine stay instead of the standard minimum thirty days. Ten days is a minimum, not a guaranteed release date. Use the separate dog guide or cat guide and the actual import permit for the full sequence of tests and treatments.
Can preparation start in Europe and finish in Britain?
Australia allows preparation in more than one approved country when the exporting country’s official veterinarian agrees to accept the work and can certify the required history. The pet must meet the continuous approved-country residence requirements. Agree this handover before leaving home: send the UK certifying practice the microchip details, vaccination record, identity verification, laboratory reports, proposed route and travel dates.
Do not let a road route casually pass through an unapproved country during preparation. Equally, do not assume that a move from one approved country to another automatically means starting the entire process again. The official vet’s ability to certify the completed work is the key decision. A European pet passport gets used for European/British entry; it is not Australia’s final export health certificate.
Book the London stay around the veterinary plan
Leave time for the agreed final tests, treatments and certificate appointments before the charter. The exact stay may be longer than a night or two. Choose accommodation that accepts your pet’s species, size and count, and arrange transport to both the veterinary practice and the confirmed departure airport. London does not automatically mean Heathrow.
Compare a private transfer quote against the full do-it-yourself cost: fuel, tolls, pet crossing fees, hotels, rail pet tickets, crate transport and the final English transfer. Ask the driver about rest stops and whether you and the pet travel together. For a cat, keep the carrier secure during every handover; for a dog, pack a lead and an accessible water bowl.
After the London–Melbourne flight
The in-cabin charter changes the flight experience; it does not waive Australian biosecurity. Relevant Group 3 arrivals enter through Melbourne and go to the government quarantine facility at Mickleham. Plan your own accommodation separately and keep the pet’s onward domestic travel flexible until release is confirmed. The charter itself must meet the government’s specific requirements for private or charter aircraft.
Discuss your Europe–London–Melbourne move with SKYE PETS. Send your starting town, pet details, recent country history and preferred month so the flight and veterinary plan can be considered together.
Work out where each booking begins and ends
- Calais shuttle: Le Pet Express collects at Calais Fréthun and drops at Ashford International. The rail or road journeys on either side need their own pet arrangements.
- Private pet taxi: request the actual home or airport pickup and the final British address, with pet number, carrier dimensions and luggage included.
- Ferry: identify the ship and pet accommodation before paying for the passenger fare, then reserve the port transfer. A general ferry ticket is not confirmation of a pet cabin.
Build a written handover between the two vets
Send the UK certifying practice one organised file: identity records, vaccination dates, laboratory reports, permit information and the proposed country-by-country route. Ask which final appointments must happen in Britain and which records can be accepted from the preparing country. Use that answer to decide how long to stay near London; do not choose a one-night stop first and try to make the veterinary work fit afterwards.
What shared flights have taught us about route planning
Our September 2026 Melbourne–Auckland–Los Angeles flight brought several different pet journeys onto one aircraft. It illustrates why a shared departure still needs individual preparation: an owner’s destination, the animal’s history and the import file must all fit the flight. The same principle applies when families reach London from different European starting points.
