Flying with Flat-Faced Dogs and Cats: Questions to Ask

Flat-faced pets can have airway problems even at rest. Heat, exertion and stress may make those problems worse. Neither the breed name nor a place in the passenger cabin establishes that an individual animal is suitable for a flight.

Start with an individual health assessment

Check the actual airline policy

Airline restrictions differ by breed, route, season and handling arrangement. It is inaccurate to say every major airline bans all flat-faced pets. Qantas Freight’s international pet guidance includes specialist booking arrangements and restrictions; check the current policy for the specific journey rather than assuming either acceptance or a blanket ban.

What in-cabin travel changes

Travelling in the passenger cabin can allow the owner to observe and reassure the pet, subject to the approved restraint arrangement and crew instructions. Aircraft conditions, ground handling and government inspections still matter. Do not assume zero heat exposure, sea-level oxygen, uninterrupted access or a guaranteed clinical outcome.

Before accepting an itinerary

• Obtain a veterinary assessment appropriate to this animal and journey.
• Confirm government breed eligibility as well as operating-airline acceptance.
• Ask how the pet is restrained during each flight stage and what access is permitted.
• Agree the plan for delays, temperature exposure, medication and any signs of illness.
• Check whether arrival inspection or quarantine requires separation from the owner.
