Flying a Flat-Faced Pet to New Zealand: A Route Planning Guide
Combine an individual veterinary assessment with the entry rules and flight arrangements for New Zealand.
A trans-Tasman sector may be relatively short, but the whole journey includes ground transfers and clearance. Check the selected MPI pathway and the operating airline’s policy.
Two checks to complete before booking
First, read the flat-faced pet flight guide with your veterinarian. Then use the New Zealand entry guide to identify the separate government requirements. Neither check replaces the other.
Questions for your veterinarian
- Is this animal suitable for the complete itinerary, considering breathing, age, other conditions and past travel?
- Does the animal need further investigation, treatment or reassessment before departure?
- What is the plan for food, water, regular medication and signs of distress?
- Could a different season, shorter itinerary or postponement be better?
Questions for the flight team
- Which aircraft and operating airline are confirmed for this departure?
- What carrier or harness is approved, and what access to the pet is permitted?
- How are ground transfers, stops and arrival checks arranged?
- What happens if the animal becomes unwell before departure or a sector is delayed?
In-cabin travel allows a different owner–pet experience, but it does not remove the physiological demands of flying or guarantee that a pet with airway disease can travel. Confirm operator acceptance and government breed eligibility in writing.
