Things To Do with Your Dog in Sydney: Beaches, Parks & Coastal Walks
Sydney is one of the world's great cities for dogs — off-leash beaches, iconic coastal walks, and a café culture that puts a bowl of water and a biscuit outside as standard.
Sydney rewards dog owners like few cities on earth. The combination of world-class beaches, dramatic coastal walking, enormous urban parks and a genuinely dog-friendly café culture makes it one of the best cities in the world to own a pet.
Coastal Walks
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
Sydney's most famous walk, with 6km of clifftop drama from Bondi to Coogee, passing Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly beaches along the way. Dogs are welcome on leads throughout. At Bronte and Clovelly, dogs are permitted in designated off-leash areas in the early morning before 9am. The walk takes around 2 hours. Bring water for your dog and stop at one of the many cafés along the way.
Manly to Spit Bridge Scenic Walkway
A 10km bush track along the northern shores of Middle Harbour, arguably Sydney's most beautiful walk. Dogs on leads throughout. The track winds through Sydney Harbour National Park bushland with stunning harbour views, secluded beaches and multiple spots where your dog can swim. Take the ferry to Manly and finish at Spit Bridge.
Off-Leash Parks
Centennial Parklands
Sydney's largest urban park has multiple designated off-leash zones, with maps available on the Centennial Parklands website. The Grand Drive perimeter is perfect for longer runs, and the ponds are popular with water-loving dogs. Early morning on weekends the park comes alive with Sydney's dog community.
Bicentennial Park, Homebush
A large off-leash area near the former Olympic site. Less glamorous than Centennial Park but spacious and well-maintained. Particularly good for large breeds that need serious running space.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
Sirius Cove, Mosman
A sheltered off-leash beach on Sydney Harbour with calm water, a beautiful bush setting and a genuine escape from the city. Dogs can swim freely and the surrounding Taronga Zoo land creates a wildlife corridor that makes the morning atmosphere extraordinary. Take the ferry to Taronga Zoo Wharf.
Shark Beach, Nielsen Park
Dogs are welcome at Shark Beach outside summer restrictions — check Sydney Harbour National Park's current rules. The beach is shark-netted and the water is exceptional. The walk through Vaucluse to get there is beautiful in its own right.
Dog-Friendly Cafés
Sydney's café culture has fully embraced dogs. Virtually every café with outdoor seating in Newtown, Surry Hills, Glebe, Paddington and the eastern suburbs will welcome a well-behaved dog. Many now offer "puppuccinos", a small cup of milk foam, as a standard offering. Newtown's King Street is arguably Sydney's most dog-friendly café strip.
Paralysis ticks are a genuine danger in Sydney's bushland areas, particularly in the northern suburbs and along the northern coastal walks. Use vet-recommended tick prevention and check your dog thoroughly after every bush walk.
