Flying with a cat between Singapore and the UK: a practical cabin travel guide

A move overseas changes almost everything familiar to a cat: rooms, smells, routines and the people coming through the door. Planning the journey carefully gives you fewer decisions to make while also managing packing and moving day.

Start with the travel space

Before buying a new carrier, check the requirements for the actual flight and ground arrangements. AVS specifies a rigid IATA-compliant crate for transfers to Changi Animal & Plant Quarantine Station, including for pets arriving in the cabin; a soft bag is not accepted for that transfer.

Once the equipment is agreed, give your cat time to become familiar with it at home. Ask your vet how to approach this if your cat finds confinement difficult. Share any medical or behavioural concerns before making the booking.

Decide what you need within reach

Discuss bedding, absorbent liners, cleaning supplies and the arrangements for water and toileting with the team. Your own hand luggage should be organised so you can find the agreed essentials easily.

Keep veterinary documents together and ask which originals need to accompany you. A copy on your phone can be useful for reference, but it should not replace an original where one is required.

Plan a controlled departure from home

Moving day often means open doors and unfamiliar people carrying boxes. Consider how you will keep your cat securely contained while the household is busy, and agree who is responsible for them at each stage.

Leave enough time to get from home to the departure meeting point without rushing. If someone else is handling the luggage or vehicle, make sure they know where the cat’s equipment and paperwork are.

Think about your first evening after arrival

Prepare a secure space at your destination before the journey. Have the essentials ready, including litter supplies, food arrangements and somewhere to rest. Check windows, doors and access points before opening the carrier.

Allow for arrival procedures when telling a friend, driver or accommodation host when to expect you. The landing time is only one part of the arrival plan.
